    Ad Banner is basically a form of an online ad that links to another web site or a landing page or sales page.  Leaderboards are the large horizontal boxes positioned at the top of a web page, skyscrapers are vertical boxes and the smaller rectangular boxes are usually called buttons.

    AdSense was created in 1998 by Oingo later acquired by Google in 2003. Adsense can be either text or image display ads directly targeted to a pages content and are geographically specific. Publishers who decide to utilize Adsense are paid a percentage of what the advertiser pays Google when a visitor clicks on the ad. By signing up for a adsense account publishers are given a JavaScript to add to their site that has a unique id embedded in the code for tracking and analytical purposes. Obviously high traffic websites can do well with Adsense revenue.

    Advertising Network An advertising network acts as a liaison between publishers and advertisers.  Advertising buyers reach a broader audience when publishers  assist them in selling their ad inventory through the advertising network.   Advertising Networks will no doubt continue to grow as the shift in consumer attention from traditional broadcast and print shifts to the internet and other digital media.

    Ad Overlay- Small horizontal semi-transparent overlay across the screen of an online video, usually along the bottom.

    Advertorial an advertisement that that has the appearance of a news article or editorial.

    Adware Should be banned.  Adware is a  software application in which advertising banners are displayed while the program is running.  Adware  often includes code that tracks a user’s personal information and passes it on to third parties, without the user’s authorization or knowledge.

    Affiliate Is someone who promotes and markets an advertisers products and or services through many channels including email, contextual, search, social media and earns commissions for referrals, leads or sales.

    Affiliate Marketing Promoting products and services through distribution  channels, ie;  through “Affiliates.”   Affiliate Marketing is cost effective and efficient way to promote products from a Advertiser’s standpoint.  The advertiser pays commissions through defined actions to Affiliates for performance usually clicks, leads, sales, engagements etc.

    Affiliate Network Third party liaison/facilitator  connecting advertisers (companies with products or services) and publishers (promoters who display and promote an advertisers products or services for commissions), and coordinates the interests of both by driving traffic and conversions to advertiser sites through a commission-based pricing model for publishers. An affiliate network facilitates tracking, accounting commissions etc.

    Affiliate Program- Most successful marketers have created their own affiliate programs.  They provide a means for publishers to monetize their audiences.

    Affiliate Program Manager Is an active business promoter responsible for administering and optimizing an affiliate program.

    ALT Text is used to provide alternative text in non text elements such as images etc.  Alt attribute is used in HTML and XHTML to specify text.  Alt text is used to state a purpose ie if you are using a picture you would add ALT text to describe the purpose.  Visually impaired readers will hear the text in place of a picture.

    Animated GIF is similar to the way cartoons were originally made.  An animated GIF file formate creates the effect of animation by rotating through a series of static images.  Best suited for logos or simpler images because of the color limitation.

    AVI- Audio Video Interleave-  allows  synchronized audio-with-video playback.

    B2B Business to Business advertising directed from one business to another.

    Banner Blindness a term used in marketing for “consumer” blindness regarding banner advertisement either consciously or subconsciously so advertisers utilyze different techniques in an attempt to conquer consumer banner blindness such as by creating text heavy ads that look like content

    Beyond the Banner term in online marketing to think beyond banner advertisement using other forms such as the ever annoying, but better converting pop up ads or text links in newsletters etc.

    Channel Distribution is an existing organised  network that perform marketing tasks linking producers to end consumers.

    Click Fraud In many jurisdictions  Click fraud is a felony.  When a person, or computer program imitates a legitimate user by clicking on an ad (pay per click advertising) without real interest in the target of the ads link.  There is no excuse to click on an ad without honest intent even if you are producing a educational video.

    Click Through a term used describing the process of clicking through of an online advertisement.

    Click Through Rate CTR is described in a percentage basis.  It represents the number of clicks in relation to the number of times the ad was seen.  A 30% CTR is not only darn good but means that for every 100 visitors 30 visitors clicked on the ad.

    Cloaking a Link is a practice that prevents link theft and displays a disguised link in the user’s status bar of their web browser.

    Copyright a copyright gives control and certain rights to the originator or inventor of original work for a certain timeline protecting them from exploitation without consent, permission or attribution.

    Co-Registration Path users are lead through a series of campaigns after submitting demographic information with the incentive of receiving a free item.  The free gift is usually paired with a minimal number of offers being ordered by the user in order to receive the free item.

    Comparative Advertising is comparing one brand to another or relating the benefits of a certain brand over another.

    Contextual Ad is referred to as ad placement determined by a system that scans website content and places relevant ads based on the content and keywords in that content.  Or the placement of ads related to what the user is searching for.
